韓愈，字退之，南陽人。少孤，刻苦爲學，盡通六經百家。貞元八年，擢進士第，才高，又好直言，累被黜貶。初爲監察御史，上疏極論時事，貶陽山令。元和中，再爲博士，改比部郎中、史館修撰，轉考功、知制誥，進中書舍人，又改庶子。裴度討淮西，請爲行軍司馬，以功遷刑部侍郎。諫迎佛骨，謫刺史潮州，移袁州。穆宗即位，召拜國子祭酒、兵部侍郎。使王廷湊，歸，轉吏部。爲時宰所搆，罷爲兵部侍郎，尋復吏部。卒，贈禮部尚書，諡曰文。愈自比孟軻，闢佛老異端，篤舊卹孤，好誘進後學，以之成名者甚衆。文自魏晉來，拘偶對，體日衰，至愈，一返之古。而爲詩豪放，不避麤險，格之變亦自愈始焉。集四十卷，內詩十卷，外集遺文十卷，內詩十八篇，今合編爲十卷。
