吳兢，汴州浚儀人。博通經史，魏元忠、朱敬則深器之，薦其有史才，因令直史館。神龍中，遷石補闕，與韋承慶、崔融等撰《則天實錄》。開元中，歷修文館學士，居史職殆三十年，序事簡要，人皆稱之。出爲荆州司馬，以史稿自隨。蕭嵩監修國史，奏取兢所撰，得六十五卷。累遷台、洪、饒、蘄四州刺史。天寶初，爲鄴郡太守，入爲恆王傅。嘗以梁、陳、齊、周、隋五代史繁雜，乃別撰各史，又傷疎略。卒年八十餘。卒後，其子進兢所撰《唐史》八十餘卷，事多紕繆，不逮壯年。兢家多藏書，嘗錄其卷第，號《吳氏西齋書目》。詩二首。
